Healthy Living to 100

Japan has just announced that their population now includes over 40,000 people who are older than 100 years. Ten years ago, their centenarian population was just 10,000.

Lots of people are leaving comments at this article about what kind of healthy habits lead to a long life. Here's one example;

My father is over 95 now, still walks his dog every day. He does NOT take any medication of any kind even when he has a normal cold, does not smoke (never has), never drank alcohol in excess and is heathy as a horse except for his eyesight. Even when he has a small cut, he lets it heal by itself, he has been told by his doctor that he has a remarkable immune system.

What's his secrect? Not quite sure myself! He has the occassional glass of red wine with his supper (Frenchman of course), eats lots of garlic, olive oil, salt, butter, spices, cheese, salad, good bread (not the sliced crap), coffee each morning, occassional red meat but his favorite is fish. I have never seen him eat fast food or grocery bought prepared foods. He still cooks everything from scratch, home cooking!

Presently lives in California. (has dual nationality - born France/ naturalized Canadian)

I think eating healthy has alot to do with living a long life. There are so many toxins and chemicals in our food today - and we wonder why so many people are overweight.

I live in Okinawa, still might have the highest per capita of people over 100 then anywhere in the world.

Low calorie, variety and balance seems to be the mantra of the older population.

Just a quick thought. A Naturopath recently told me that there are certain essential amino acids in raw meat that are not available in cooked meat. (you'll have to google it to get the full scoop..I have not had time) Sashimi....high quality rare tuna.....I wonder what role that plays in living to 100 in Japan? Worth some thought, anyway.

OH! I also read that, on average, Japanese people eat 100 different foods every week. Variety.

What are your through on the Weight Watcher diet? I just started it last week. Lost 2.8 pounds in a week, but only once felt "full". I think, having said that, that perhaps "full" isn't what I should strive for. You know -- I'm 51 and my children have never known me NOT to be dieting. And yet the scale keeps creeping up. Why do some people have these insatiable cravings and others literally forget to eat?

I believe the theory of a variety of food intake. My parents are both 92 and still going strong. Still on the farm and helping their grandson take care of the farming chores. They still raise a lot of garden fresh veggies instead of buying the canned variety with all the extras added in.

This is a cool post. I hope that I too can live to 100 as long as I am in good health.
