The Best Sources of Protein

A high protein diet is increasingly being recommended for fast weight loss. A friend of mine needs a hernia operation and he was told he had to lose almost 25 pounds in less than three months before the operation. A hernia operation is much less risky if there is less stomach fat. He has been placed on a high protein, low carb diet. It's not recommended for the long term, but as a fast way to lose the extra weight.

The Harvard School of Public Health has a great article about the best sources of protein. They say the best sources are fish, beans and chicken.

I tried Atkins a few years ago and although I lost seven pounds in a couple of days, I was worried about the health ramifications and haven't tried it since.
Does this diet also cut out fruit and veg?

Sorry, that was supposed to read in a couple of *weeks* not *days*!

The diet includes lots of vegies and salads (vegetable broth soups, raw salads) and a grapefruit as part of breakfast.

I've been struggling with protein myself lately... for my Tween Son. He doesn't like beef or lamb, doesn't want chicken every day, likes eggs when smothered in cheese, and likes bacon. He suddenly can't have most nuts and seeds, and will tolerate a can of baked beans a couple of times a week. I bought some pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds today, and am fervently praying that they won't produce a reaction in him. Any suggestions? Feel free to comment on my blog: Vee at www.veegettinghealthy.blogspot.com ... thanks!

Hi, love the site.

I want to caution people about underlying health conditions and high protein diets. I learned a year ago I have a kidney disease called IgA nephropathy--I'm lucky, mine is on a slow course and is responding to treatment, but before it was diagnosed I thought my weight problems were just normal. I did the worst thing I could do for myself--ate a lot of protein. For stressed kidneys a high protein diet can cause irreversible damage. Like I said, I was lucky, but I can now only eat about 8 oz of protein a day--otherwise I spill it out when I eliminate.

If you have problems with edema, at any age, make your doctor figure out why. I started having edema problems at 35, and my doctors at the time shrugged it off. It was, as it turned out, kidney disease, and I didn't start treating it for 10 years, when they found high protein in my urine and low protein in my blood. My doctor said that with my diet and exercise, I probably had kept the weight under control even with the underlying health problem, but when I got a much more sedentary job the weight ballooned, I started eating high protein, REALLY had edema problems, and finally got diagnosed.

Again, most people are healthy, and most eat lots of vegetables with their higher protein diets, etc. This is just a *caution* to look for underlying health problems. If you are doing the diet and exercising and still not losing weight, there might be something going on.

Sorry if I came on strong, just had a bad experience. :) Ellen.
